PODCAST: Gaydar Radio Club Nation Mix

When Tony English first asked me to put a mix on Gaydar Radio for his club nation show, I was thrilled. This was then met by terror. What do I put on it? In a club you can gauge what to play, where you go with the music and the people, but a cold light of day mix meant for a gay commercial radio station! This was a challenge!

This mix took me longer than normal to put together, because I had to think about what I was putting on it. I had to consider the market it was going to…and knew I would be judged on it if not least by the Gaydar listeners but myself. I wanted it to be accessible, in line with Gaydars commercialised playlists (I checked) but also I had to look good in front of my peers. Choices, choices, choices.

First it had to have music I have been playing out recently. That was important. I could have packed it with new tunes to impress, but I figured they wanted what I played out…so my market was LoProfile, Gaydars real world club brand. This meant I was to go down nuFunk House style.

Slowly the mix started to develop and emerge…a mix of familiar samples in new house tunes, some brilliant covers, a couple of fresh tracks and a few of my floor favorites. Looking back I can now see there is certain feel to the mix…a friend described as ‘Brent Retro Funky’…and that is an apt summary.

There is almost a old skool funky house vibe to it…a sound I have been describing over the last two years as nuFunk…and it seems more and more of it was coming out and I have put into this mix. I had to cut a few tracks that were ‘pumping, hard and not very Gaydar Radio’. I figured the demographic of the radio station will suit this mix…I did what I would do in any club…match my style to the crowd. I figured Hard On customers who like it edgier wouldn’t listen to Gaydar Radio, but LoProfie, Profile and Rupert Street types would. And with that the mix was born.

MUSIC: TOP 5 PODCASTS 2011 (November Update)

According to iTunes downloads combined with file share and podomatic plays/downloads, these are my current top 5 podcasts.

To access each PODCASTS individual page, click on the mix cover.

1. LIVE SESSIONS 2011: LO PROFILE (PLAYTIME MIX)

Despite just being released earlier this months, this has become my biggest download for 2011. This may be attributed to my growing iTunes subscriptions and ease of access to current mixes on Podomatic.

Live Sessions 2011: LoProfile (Playtime Mix)

2. LET’S ALL CHANT

Disco reinvented in this series of podcasts that only includes tracks of old that have been remixed, resampled and/or recovered from the 70′s, 80′s 90′s & the  00′s. This is the third mix in that series.

Let's All Chant

Let's All Chant: Remixed, Redone, Recovered

3. GROOVE IS IN THE ARSE

Part two of a mix called Groove Is…, the sexier and dirtier beats of Groove Is In The Arse seemed more successful than it’s funkier and nuFunkified counterpart Groove Is In The Heart. With a mix of chunky tunes, this podcasts was full of new tunes.

5. MUSIC FOR PIMPS, HOOKERS & GOGOS

PODCAST: LovePulse

Feel the rhythm, feel the beat, feel the pulse of the music! Promoting LoveChild’s move from Fire to the new gay super club Pulse I have created a special podcast of 18 pumping tracks covering most of the genres i am currently playing. This 1.5 hours of pure uplifting and chunked up club house that hits you in your funky bone…

Right from the start you will find your butt grooving with the tough, yet funky  Let’s Get This Thing Started by the Pizza Brothers hailing a new direction and a new home for the club that won Best Monthly Club in 2010 at the www.seenqueen.com club poll. The tracks that follow maintain the pace and feel pumping your groove thing until  we hit some fantastic vocal fuelled track including my current favourite The Edge Of The Earth by Richard Dinsdale. This Producer/remixer has easily become one to watch with a funky and uplifting sound that is spearheading it’s way into the clubs. With Sykes & Sugarstarr cover of the Rolling Stones No Satisfaction hitting your ear drums, you will start to move like Jagger before entering the more old skool and edgier feel with the fantastic remake of My House. Now what would one of my podcasts be without a disco dip into the funky pool and there are a few tracks that do just that ooozing Hed Kandy style including Alex Kenji’s soon to be massive Emotion and another Richard Dinsdale track DJ You Got My Love. The mix goes a little techy with the hypnotic and sexy Knick Knack before going back to where we started with some electro tipped and the very funny tunes ending with Loca People by Sak Noelwho sums everything up by singing “What the f*ck!? All day, all night ,All day, all night ,Viva la fiesta, viva la noche ,Viva los DJ’s, I couldn’t believe what I was living….” Feel the pulse of LoveChild!

Podcast: Groove Is In The Arse

Part two of the Groove Is In Podcast….this time baby it sphincter clenching and anal pumping ARSE MUSIC!

Groove Is In The Arse heads  down a funky, chunky and very much in the arse shaking territory type of sound. More an extension that than anything else of  ‘Groove Is I n The Heart’, this mix is a little tougher in parts with and edgier feel but still remains in the funkier realm. Yet again there are some remarkable remakes on here…it seems as I get older more and more tracks being redone. With a couple of bootlegs, some progressive tunes and lots of sexy beats, ‘Groove Is In The Arse’ is where it will hit you. The question is, are you a Heart or Arse man?

Disco Matt Reviews ‘Casa Latino 2011′

Disco Matt reviews Casa Latino as part of his March Podcast line up.

He says

Hot on Steve’s heels is another D.J. who has been filling our musical boots with banging beats since those Crash days and never fails to get us ”Doing The Disco Matt” these days, whether it be at Industri, down in Lo-Profile, across at Lovechild or even away from the sling at Hard On! (oops that’s cousin Crisco Matt!) and more often than not, when we are peddling around London’s roads. Indeed, while we were away in South Africa, Brent’s compilations were filling our ears by the poolside, down on the beach & even up on Table Mountain, not least his latest & third creation of 2011, harping back to his “No Americano” release a few months ago, but this one crammed with up to date Latino beats. Indeed, when you think of Latino music mixed in the modern way, there is no better exponent of this art, Brent?, well Brent Nicholls of course.

So in “Casa Latino” (full title includes “No Americano Two”) he pulls of the Latin beats brilliantly and we simply couldn’t resist downloading it while in Cape Town and bouncing along Seapoint’s main road laughing, grinning & getting weird looks as a result, that’s how entertaining we find this compilation. And from the off, Mr Nicholls gets you in that Latino mood with a catchy number “Swing Time”, although it was (and still is) “Mi Cha Cha” that caused those hilarious outbursts in Cape Town, although with a full 18 tracks to choose from, all brilliantly blended by Brent, this departure from the dancefloor norm is amazingly addictive.

Podcast- MMX VOLUME ONE: Anthems 2010 (Jan-Jun)

Welcome to the annual collection of the biggest hits of 2010. Theses tunes moved me and you this year be it in a bar, club or fetish venue. Uplifting, inspiring, funky, groovy, chunky and hot are a few words to describe this collection of tracks totalling 50 in all. It was a little difficult to choose my favourite 50 tracks but here it is!

2010 was the year of what I called NuFunk house where funky, disco and groovy was once more injected back into house music moving away from the more souless electronic sound and adding a bit of latin fusion and disco sparkle. NuFunk isn’t a genre but a sound recognisable across several genres and I took it upon myself to launch this onto the gay scene that was over run with progressive Spanish sounds that started to go the way funky house did (cheap vocals, plagiarised beats and a little bit G.A .Y).  NuFunk injected glamour, style and funkiness back into all genres of house music.

The movers and shakers of 2010 were definitely Danny Verde, Audio Jackers,  Riva Starr, Mark Knight & Funkagenda.

VOLUME ONE is a collection of tracks I first acquired between January and June 2010. Many of these became massive hits across many dance floors, while others are my personal favourites.

Podcast: INDUSTRI 2010- Gotta Move

Launched in January 2008 at Barcode Vauxhall , Industri was intended to be a social soiree aimed at scene clubbers, gogos, off duty DJs and the like with Queen of the London scene Minty as host. Alongside Minty both myself, Brent Nicholls, and Paul Heron played exclusive back 2 back sets.

Industri 2010 Gotta Move

Industri 2010 Gotta Move

For me, Industri was the gig where I tested new tunes, played classics and tried out tracks that could have either crashed or ignited a main dance floor. Over the years Industri gained regulars, had its up and downs and hosted many memorable and at times wild parties. It launched DJs, Gogos and was the drop off spot for a lot of the Vauxhall clubbers. Of course over time, Industri has changed and after nearly 3 years we decided it need a bit of new direction….and that was to move to BCV sister club Barcode Soho and from a Thursday to a Wednesday night. That’s right, Soho is about to get a bit of Industri style.

In honour of this next chapter in the Industri story, I have compiled a 12 track podcast collecting together a mix of tracks across several genres that best represents my Industri sound. From NuFunk to Tech House flavours, from Latin touches to disco dipped…this is music for moving and grooving.

Like the opening track says:

“Gotta make a move to a, Town that’s right for me, Town to keep me movin’, Keep me groovin’ with some energy,
Well, I talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about, Talk about, Talk about movin,
Gotta move on, Gotta move on, Gotta move on,
Won’t you take me to….Industri……”

Podcasts: LoveChildOne- Feels Like Fire Mix.

LoveChild celebrates it’s 1st Birthday at fire. Born nearly two years ago, I was there at the beginning and this is my 1st birthday tribute to the club.

LoveChild One: Feels Like Fire Mix

LoveChild One: Feels Like Fire Mix

Called LOVECHILD-ONE: THE FEELS LIKE FIRE MIX…I was tempted to compile a ‘greatest hits’ collection but instead went for the the future with a collection of funky flavoured nuFunk, tech dipped and disco inspired tunes…yes, funky house it seems has come around again, and a club like LoveChild inspired by sexiness and glamour goes hand in hand with this more upmarket and inspired sound. Remixes of old tracks meet turbo charged new tunes…dirty bass lines, familiar samples, sexy beats and pure glamour dripped disco flavoured tunes merge to create a mix that will make you not just move, but groove.

Happy Birthday to LoveChild!

Aural: NuFunk House

Join me with over and hour and a half of uplifting nuFUNK house drawing on the fresh sounds of summer. On this podcast I mix and merge the disco elements of funky house, the sexiness of progressive house, the dirtiness of electro house and the passion of Latin flavoured grooves and create an Aural landscape as we move through the variety of nuFUNK grooves. Feel the rhythm and let the music take control and enjoy the summery vibes.

Featured tracks include the ultra funky ‘Let The Bass Line Taken Control’ by Dr Kucho, the nuFunk sound of Funagenda vs Markl Knight on ‘Devil Walking’, Mike Candy’s anthemic ‘People Hold On’, the Latin-tastic ‘We No speak Americano’ by Yolanda Be Cool and the Mogwai remix of the classic ‘It just Won’t Do’ by Tim Deluxe.
