PODCAST: DISCO PILLS & OTHER THRILLS

This is my first non-club/promo/speciality podcast of 2012… a mix where i select tracks I actually like, rocking my world and floors, and that are fresh off the mp3 press and compile them into a podcast that has a name that tries and reflects the style of the mix.

On DISCO PILLS I mix up a variety of genres into one smooth groove. Containing progressive, electro, funky, disco, latin and tech elements…these are the disco pills…all thrown into one bottle, shaken up and served cool. WARNING>>>can be addictive!

There are soem great fresh tunes on here, some excellent covers and remixes and plenty of new tracks to grap your attention.

Since this is a non-club-specific mix it best represents my broad style. From nuFunk bar tunes to dirty  ’Hard On’ style tracks. There is a total of 20 tracks clocking in to about one hour and 45 minutes of pumping house.

What takes you up, shakes your body onto the ground and makes you jump, pump and groove? Like they say in the MAtrix….”You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Which one will you take?…”

This mix is recorded at 192kps, 146mb and is 1.41 hours in length.

As part of my annual collection of end of year house hits I am happy to present MMXI: ANTHEMS 2011 VOL 1.

There is no need to further introduce these tunes that rocked my dance floor in 2011. This choice is based on the tracks I liked to play as opposed to what were the biggest hits, some of which I felt obliged to play to balance the educator/Entertainer aspect of DJing. This is VOLUME 1, with 25 tracks, just over two hours of music.

Podcast: Brent Nicholls vs. Minty- The Minty Mix

Here is another ‘versus’ mix, this time scene-starlet Minty has selected the tunes. This is the Minty Mix!

Minty is the third person I have done a collaboration with where they choose the tracks and I mix them. Minty is well-known on the London gay scene, and her mix was the most challenging to date because quite a few of her tracks were not house mixes. Sourcing house remixes wasn’t too hard, but being true to the original was proving more difficult. Luckily Minty gave a relatively long list to choose from and some of those track were suitable house mixes. Here taste, to say the least, is eclectic. The tunes she choose range over 10 years with a few 60′s belters thrown in such as the Mamas & The Pappa’s ‘California Dreaming’ which Beenny Benassi remixed in about 2006. If there was one thing that dominated was the theme of Rock n Roll. Minty is and rock-chic at heart and this is reflected in here choices. Whether it be a more up to date house track like I Rock I Sweat or a remix of an older familiar track….guitar, sexiness, an edge and raw energy is all part of it. This is the sound of Minty…the Minty Mix

Play 2011 is a collection of stomping brand  new (well at least 80%)  hot house tunes freshly squeezed from the MP3 press. I have also added a few current dance floor favourites and a few current essential house tracks in the mix.

Recorded live at Industri on Thursday 1st April 2010 at Barcode Vauxhall to mark Easter, Brent Nicholls & Paul Coals went back to back each playing half hour sets before tagging the next DJ. With two unique styles merging to create a new sound, this mix captures the best of both DJs. This is the first time these DJs have played together before in this manner. The direction of the set could of gone anywhere…the end result being an uplifting, funky and pumping house set. Who played what and when? That will be left for you to discover to see if you can spot when the DJs swapped over.

This is the second in the DOWNLOAD series that features some of my favourite new house tunes freshly acquired from the digital world. On this mix I play homage to the Italian club PERVERT which will be co-hosting BEYOND on 28.3.2010.

Influenced by what I call NuFunk House, I integrate several genre of music that reflect that new sexy and funky sound that that seems to be emerging; not deifned by any particular genre but found across most house styles. Get ready to experience the funk in progressive, electro. tech house and funky house tunes that I have added here; mixing it up using the ‘funky’ elements to programme the tracks togehter rather than defining them by thier genre. Here Latin grooves meet progessive house which slides into a remix of a classic funky house track in line with this sexy and grittier sound. All these tracks will hit you in your hips; and even though you may not take to all of them at first, give this mix up to three listens and I guarantee you will be hooked and feeling the funk.

BARCODE SOHO is an award winning Bar that recently was voted BEST BAR of 2009 in the www.SeenQueen.com Club Poll 2009. It attracts a wide cross section of gay Londoner from the hunky and hot gAylisters to the more down to earth type. The bar is perfect for a drink, a chat, a meet up and a cruise. I play down stairs in the ‘club section’ of the venue; and due to it’s 1am closing time it is the perfect pre-party to a longer night out or an early to bed club night. A BCS DJ set is usually from 10pm to close and this mix is a 1.5 hour excerpt from midway through the night. Due to the many gay tribes the place attracts the music I play will contain a variety of styles form funky house to tougher tribal/progressive house, from anthems to new releases and from commercial house to underground. The venue has a ‘down to earth’ reputation and I feel the music needs to meet the different reasons people go there- either for an ‘early club night’ a ‘cruise’ or ‘to socialize’. In that way the tunes I play embraces all those styles mentioned but remains accessible to a general clubbing crowd…nothing too deep, underground or obscure; and keeping this balance between ‘fun’ and ‘credible’ I think can be seen reflected in this live mix. From a sexy tribal cover of a Blondie classic, to a tougher mix of a Beyonce hit and from the progressive sounds of EDX onto the Latin fusions of Copyright…this is a night out at Barcode Soho (well, at least half the night). Don’t be fooled by the title of my first mix for 2010 ‘DEEP INSIDE’. I won’t bore you with some deep and meaningful house music, or something so deep and credible it get’s buried under the flag of ‘next tune’…DEEP INSIDE is more about that ‘feeling’ you get, well, ‘deep inside’ when you hear THAT house tune. THAT house tune could be anything from a commercial remix, a classic track covered and pimped for the 21stC or a song so sexy it makes you want to hump the bass bin. It moves you. It grooves you. I touches something ‘deep inside’. It is different for all us, after all we are individuals. On this latest promotional mix I an not going to assume that all or any of these tracks will touch your core…but in one way or another they touched mine; whether it is the deep and moderesque mix of Leomeo’s ‘Give Me Luv’, a remix of one of my all time favourite songs found sampled in ‘Feels Like Fire’ by Players Please or uplifting electro commercialism of ‘No Superstar’ by Remaday…for one reason or another and in different ways these tunes rocked me and hopefully they will find their way in to you…somewhere deep inside.
