PODCAST: Live Sessions- Kazbar Kuts 04.2012

The second of my LIVE SESSIONS mixes of 2012, this mix was extracted from my set at Clapham’s friendliest local gay bar Kazbar.

On Clapham High Street, the Kazbar is a gay icon of the area, being for many their ‘local’ pub…a place to meet friends, drop in for a drink, or a gather before pre-clubbing. Closing at 1am, during the week the bar plays commercial video clips, while on the weekend DJs are bought in to give the place some kick.

This mix was recorded on a Friday night.

Playing a bar needs a careful balance to be accessible but not predictable, uplifting so people may groove, but not. It needs to be the perfect companion to drinking and the perfect beat to warm them up for the next stage of their night.

My approach to the Kazbar is keeping it strictly funky. It’s a place I can let my groovier side out, where a lot of disco flavoured grooves meet vocal house, sexy commercial remixes saddle up to some of the biggest (and best) current club tracks. Latin touches, classic remixes and older tracks from over the last couple of years are also included. Along with the newer tracks, you can enjoy others that are familiar.

Get down and boogie with the Kazbar Kuts. Over 1.5 hour of funky house grooves. LIVE SESSIONS do not contain track listings.

Podcasts: MMXI Anthems 2011 Volume 2

This is the second volume of MMXI, a collection of 50 of the hottest tunes of 2011.

On this compilation you will fnd a lot of old classics remixed, not at first noticeable when played over the year…but when it came to picking my top 50 at leats 50% were made up remixes.

Many of these tracks came from the 80′s, some from the 60′s and ohters were from the funky house days.

It’s strange how one doesn’t notice the trend until the end of the year compilation.

Those on remix duty include Crazibiza and TradeLove…two influential remixers of 2011. Saying that, this also has a few hot new and original grooves.

Full of familarity and pumping throughout…these are called Anthems for a reason!

PODCAST: Gaydar Radio Club Nation Mix

When Tony English first asked me to put a mix on Gaydar Radio for his club nation show, I was thrilled. This was then met by terror. What do I put on it? In a club you can gauge what to play, where you go with the music and the people, but a cold light of day mix meant for a gay commercial radio station! This was a challenge!

This mix took me longer than normal to put together, because I had to think about what I was putting on it. I had to consider the market it was going to…and knew I would be judged on it if not least by the Gaydar listeners but myself. I wanted it to be accessible, in line with Gaydars commercialised playlists (I checked) but also I had to look good in front of my peers. Choices, choices, choices.

First it had to have music I have been playing out recently. That was important. I could have packed it with new tunes to impress, but I figured they wanted what I played out…so my market was LoProfile, Gaydars real world club brand. This meant I was to go down nuFunk House style.

Slowly the mix started to develop and emerge…a mix of familiar samples in new house tunes, some brilliant covers, a couple of fresh tracks and a few of my floor favorites. Looking back I can now see there is certain feel to the mix…a friend described as ‘Brent Retro Funky’…and that is an apt summary.

There is almost a old skool funky house vibe to it…a sound I have been describing over the last two years as nuFunk…and it seems more and more of it was coming out and I have put into this mix. I had to cut a few tracks that were ‘pumping, hard and not very Gaydar Radio’. I figured the demographic of the radio station will suit this mix…I did what I would do in any club…match my style to the crowd. I figured Hard On customers who like it edgier wouldn’t listen to Gaydar Radio, but LoProfie, Profile and Rupert Street types would. And with that the mix was born.

Podcast: LoProfile 3- Third Birthday Mix

Lo Profile, Soho’s most happening club, turns 3 years old this November (2010) and I have created a special podcast to celebrate.

Exploding on the gay scene in trendy Soho this time three years ago, the club recently went through a renovation expanding the dance floor and installing a £25000 light and laser set up. Decorated with Gaydars distinctive stars and circles, coupled with the new light show, the whole club has been given a kick of energy to launch it into another three years.

This podcast is quite special because I wanted to capture the clubs three years in music. For this reason I decided to choose one track from each year and mix them all together creating a party vibe. Nothing groundbreaking here, just a collection of good time memories defined by house music. Opening with the 2009 hit When Love Takes Over by David Guetta featuring Kelly Rowland, most tracks are big popular tunes with a few of my own personal favourites dropped in. The cycle goes 2009, 2010, 2008…and the mix ends with a special traditional ‘happy birthday’ track just for fun…after all, it is a birthday.

Podcast: Let’s All Chant- Remixed, Redone, Recovered

Know I know you are going to LOVE this! Another of my ‘specialist’ mixes, this is the third mix in my Remixed, Redone, Recovered series which mixes and mashes up all those fabulous hits of ‘yesteryear’ that have been given a 21st century touch.

Let's All Chant

Let's All Chant: Remixed, Redone, Recovered

The first two mixes were called LAST NIGHT A DJ  and  I LUVE U BABY.  This one is aptly titled LET’S ALL CHANT as it brings together a  collection of funky, groovy and soulful  hits from the disco era, a few of the more poptastic tunes from the  80′s and a healthy dose of classic house hits that have been remixed for today’s floors…that is 30 tracks making up nearly 3 hours of floorfilling euphoria!

This is 100% party, 100% fun and in a spooky kind of way a predictive precursor that is reflective of the new Funky/Disco house sound hitting your dance floors…something I labelled NuFunk at the start of this year and which has steadily grown not only in my set but in other DJs playlists too. It seems credible funky fun is ‘back in style’…let’s hope this brings back some of the glamour to the world of clubbing!

Words are not enough to tell you how this mix will take you on a journey back to your youth (or in many cases  for many of you beyond the womb when you were but a twinkle in your mother’s eye).

This is a special tracklist as not only does it tell you the name of the track, but from which disco vault it was dug up from. Some are obvious, and others not so….

Barcode Soho- Saturday Night Viral

Barcode Soho is one of the clubs/bars I work at regularly on a Saturday night about once a month. My next gig is Saturday 16th October from 10-1 in the downstairs club. I generally play a mish mash of genres from NuFunk House, chunky house, some Latin and at times good remixes of more commercial tunes by the likes of Beyonce or even Lady GaGa.

The bar has a laid back vibe and attracts aa good mix of guys form the muscle bound to the more down to earth. Being in Soho you also get the secretaries and off work gay guys…there is often funny tales of off beat request for RnB in the middle of a house set; but I do not expect these pedestrian gays and their friends to know better it often ends up on my Facebook status early in the morning as a funny anecdote of yet another inappropriate request.

Saying that there is enough eye candy to even dissolve the most inappropriate requests.

Closing at 1am, the club/bar is the perfect place to start a night of clubbing or to have an early night where one can wake up on Sunday without a hangover. The music I play needs to reflect this balance between those who are out for a drink and those who are out to party, henceforth the eclectic mix of tunes from the underground to the overground that you will hear at this bar.

The video viral you see was made by Andrew Harris, one of London’s better graphic artists.

AURAL: NuFunk House

Aural

Aural: NuFunk House

Join me with over and hour and a half of uplifting nuFUNK house drawing on the fresh sounds of summer. On this podcast I mix and merge the disco elements of funky house, the sexiness of progressive house, the dirtiness of electro house and the passion of Latin flavoured grooves and create an Aural landscape as we move through the variety of nuFUNK grooves. Feel the rhythm and let the music take control and enjoy the summery vibes.

Featured tracks include the ultra funky ‘Let The Bass Line Taken Control’ by Dr Kucho, the nuFunk sound of Funagenda vs Markl Knight on ‘Devil Walking’, Mike Candy’s anthemic ‘People Hold On’, the Latin-tastic ‘We No speak Americano’ by Yolanda Be Cool and the Mogwai remix of the classic ‘It just Won’t Do’ by Tim Deluxe.

LONDON GLOBAL DANCE FESTIVAL: The Vip Mix

LONDON GLOBAL DANCE FESTIVAL: VIP Mix

LONDON GLOBAL DANCE FESTIVAL: VIP Mix

In anticipation of the London Global Dance Festival I have created this special pre-party mix focusing on the tunes I would play for the White Party VIP reception.

As this reception is the opening of the main event, I have selected a wide range of nuFunk* House tunes. Starting definitely in the disco/funkier/soulful end of the spectrum, I gradually move towards a more progressive / tribal feel before pulling it back to a funkier house style and ending with a more clubbier and uplifting progressive vibe. I have drawn tracks from a wide cross section of genre looking for that nuFunk feel and included not only some of today’s biggest floor fillers, but also some older tracks that still enjoy a good floor response and a healthy dose of new and up and coming tunes.

There are two parts to this mix…..making nearly 3 hours of music!

*nuFunk is a term I have coined that is non genre specific, but instead a sound that I look for in all genres. It is reminscent of the funky house era, but only by style. When you give these mixes a listen you will feel the hip-gyrating, toe tapping, uplifting to the soul and accessibility of all the tracks that either otherwise could be called electro, progressive, tech or house. To best describe the vibe of nuFunk I would have to quote ‘ I love music, any kind of music, I love music, just as long as it’s groovin’….’. Get it?

Seen Queen Spring Sampler 2010

SeenQueen Spring Sampler 2010

SeenQueen Spring Sampler 2010

The Seen Queen Spring sampler is an exclusive promo mixed by DJ Brent Nicholls for www.SeenQueen.com. It features ten tracks that are predicted to become big tunes over the coming spring, some which will feature at the Miami Winter Music Conference. All of these tracks have featured in the Seen Queen’s music page Top 10 Jukebox.

Brent has intentionally selected track from a style he coins ‘Nu Funk House’…not a new genre but a noticeable ‘funking’ up of house music be it electro, progressive or tribal…and with funky house tracks returning back to their roots by being true to their disco influences.

Live Sessions: Barcode Soho Feb 2010

LIVE SESSIONS: BARCODE SOHO FEB 2010

LIVE SESSIONS: BARCODE SOHO FEB 2010

BARCODE SOHO is an award winning Bar that recently was voted BEST BAR of 2009 in the www.SeenQueen.com Club Poll 2009. It attracts a wide cross section of gay Londoner from the hunky and hot gAylisters to the more down to earth type. The bar is perfect for a drink, a chat, a meet up and a cruise. I play down stairs in the ‘club section’ of the venue; and due to it’s 1am closing time it is the perfect pre-party to a longer night out or an early to bed club night. A BCS DJ set is usually from 10pm to close and this mix is a 1.5 hour excerpt from midway through the night. Due to the many gay tribes the place attracts the music I play will contain a variety of styles form funky house to tougher tribal/progressive house, from anthems to new releases and from commercial house to underground. The venue has a ‘down to earth’ reputation and I feel the music needs to meet the different reasons people go there- either for an ‘early club night’ a ‘cruise’ or ‘to socialize’. In that way the tunes I play embraces all those styles mentioned but remains accessible to a general clubbing crowd…nothing too deep, underground or obscure; and keeping this balance between ‘fun’ and ‘credible’ I think can be seen reflected in this live mix. From a sexy tribal cover of a Blondie classic, to a tougher mix of a Beyonce hit and from the progressive sounds of EDX onto the Latin fusions of Copyright…this is a night out at Barcode Soho (well, at least half the night). Enjoy!
