Clubbing: Rupert Street

Rupert Street is a trendy bar in the hart of Soho. Like Soho it attracts a variety of gays from the various villages from the twink to the hunk and all is that is in between. Generally it is the domain of the nice ‘Abercrombie’ type, some hooker types (it is Soho after all), plenty of Brazilians…essentially it’s pure eye candy! You won’t find Vauxhall trash here.

DJs are usually on Friday, Saturday & Sunday and includes some of the best ones on the scene playing their own hot vibing tunes. Alessandro Londra is the main resident and the co-ordiantor of all the DJs which I am happy and proud to be part of.

Since it is a bar, many pre-parties are held here for some of the bigger clubs like SuperMartXe and WE.  The bar sidesteps the politics and is always up for a fun time.

The bar staff are lovely and friendly, the atmosphere relaxed and the venue has a almost ‘Ibizan feel’ to it’s decor. Opened to 23.45 (you have to be out by midnight) it is perfect for a social drink or a pre club warm up.

CLUBS: Glamour & Trash

It started with  an off the cuff remark about  a well known scene celebrity…”oh her, she doesn’t live far from the corner of glamour and trash”. Couple this with the infamous Aubrey starting a new night with Industri Queen Minty at the hip soho club DIU…I was asked if I wanted to make up  a threesome and help come up with some ideas. Marrying my Glamour & Trash comment with a new night wasn’t hard, and the name G&T (Glamour & Trash) was born.

G&T Tuesdays @ DIU

Glamour & Trash is the new night presented by Aubrey of  ’Salon’ fame, along with his former co host Minty and adding scene  DJ Brent Nicholls into the mix. They have come together on a Tuesday night to put together what may seem strange bed fellows but are actually hot and cold on the same barometer. Glamour & Trash, or better know as G&T is about fun. It’s about funky and disco house. It’s about being glamorous while teetering ever so close to the edge of being trash, but still keeping your dignity and composure.  And it’s about clubbing with your friends, peers and those who you want to club with…sure there is an aire of exclusivity about it…and deservedly so!

The venue, DIU, is a trendy underground club with laser doors, 3D illusionary lighting, a powerful sound system and a warren of alcoves and corridors where one can be glamorous or trashy….or move between both!

The music will be an uplifting mix of funky house, disco dipped grooves and vocal tunes. Nothing too  hard, nothing to wiered, just a perfect soundtrack to get down, get up and groove to. The DJ roster will feature guest DJS from the new stable of DJs that are looking for a chance to express themselves.  Brent Nicholls, have always been a supporter of new DJS and G&T is an opportunity for these DJs to express themselves within the music direction of G&T and to hopefully open a door for them into the DJ world. Brent Nicholls will be the cornerstone of the G&T music policy and there will also be special guest surprises from some of the scenes biggest names.

Aubrey experience in club promotion is well established and is best known for his long running Salon night. Minty is the scene’s most established, well recognised and best loved host. She has appeared on the doors of  not only Salon but Crash, A:M, Matinee London and Industri ensuring that the quality and the clubbers experience is second to none.

With the team Aubrey, Minty, Brent Nicholls they hope to make G&T a club for Soho socialites, glamour-funkers, friends, the drag elite and for all those who like to live close to the corner of Glamour & Trash…you know who you are!

FACEBOOK GROUP is invite only, so if you would like to join, get in contact with either MINTY, AUBREY or BRENT NICHOLLS.

Industri: Voulez Vous?

INDUSTRI is Barcode Soho’s own Wednesday night social soiree with Minty, Paul Heron & Myself. It has always been know for it’s at time controversial but stand out above the crowd flyer and artwork.

Chris Jepson was the first one to us behind the lens and created some artwork i was proud to be part of. a second photo shoot saw Paul & I in bed with Minty who wore nothing more than nipple tassels. This was followed by a ‘traditional Christmas flyer with more than a pervy twist. For  the pre party ot he called Hustla Industri we sported fetish wear which in retrospect would have made a great cover for my PIMPS, HOOKERS & GOGO podcast

A third photo shoot saw us walking the streets of Soho taking in various well now Soho spots to capture the essence of our new home as we relaunched the night at Barcode Soho. This shoot produced quite a few new images which are yet to be revealed…the first one being Minty, Paul and I standing in a puddle of water in a lane lined with sex shops, as Minty exposes here tight black sequined dress under her faux fur coat.

While these are official images for Industri, when searching for  old iconic album covers, I thought…wouldn’t it be funny to touch up these covers with an  Industri style as part of a web based viral market campaign.

With photoshop, a copy of ABBA’s Voulez Vous Album artwork and various images of Minty, Paul & Myself Industri Voulez Vous was born. It is meant to be a bit of fun, and more importantly, pay homage to my favourite icons of my youth. You can see the result below where Paul is Benny, I am Bjorn and Minty in two guises becoming AnniFrida & Agnetha.

Voulez Vous was ABBAs attempt at disco, producing some great tracks. The album track would have to be the biggest of the ‘disco tunes’ with that distinct guitar rift. Other tracks included ‘Does Your Mother Know’, one of my all time favourite ABBA tunes ‘As Good As New’, the beautiful ‘I Have A Dream’ and one of the groups biggest hits off that album ‘Chiquitita’.

I hope you enjoy looking at this artwork as much as I enjoyed putting it together…and see you t Industri…in the words of ABBA themselves on the track Voulez Vous:

“I know what you think
The girl means business so I’ll offer her a drink
Lookin’ mighty proud
I see you leave your table, pushin’ through the crowd
I’m really glad you came, you know the rules, you know the game
Master of the scene
We’ve done it all before and now we’re back to get some more
You know what I mean…..”

So if you see Minty at Industri, London’s orignal ‘Dancing Queen’, she is ‘the business’ so offer her a drink.

“Ain’t no big decision (aha!)
You know what to do (aha!)
La question c’est voulez-vous”

Just The Bear Neccessities

When Alex Erfan,  one of London’s top and more successful club promoters, asked me to DJ at the Bear Necessity party on Sat 22.1.2011 I had to question my self image. Older, yes, but a bear? More a seal or a pup…without a single hair on my body and more in favour of muscle hunk over chub, I was about to join the bears on thier exclusive picnic.

Bear  Necessity is a club from Amsterdam and in it’s short existence it seemed to have moved around Europe claiming one bear victory over another. It has been under my radar simply because it is a bear club; and the 0nly other bear club I have ever been to is Megawoof which is more a muscle bear thing than what we traditionally associate as bears.

BEAR NECESSITY @ AREA Sat 22.1.2011

I will be honest…about 6 or 7 years ago bears were called fat, old and hairy men. It was not a positive image, but somewhere along the line the ageing ‘Crash’ generation turned it around…got beefed up, stopped the shaving and pruning of the chest hairs and took over the word ‘bear’. Sure there is theXXL type of bear, but it was Megawoof  (still with it’s share of chubs ) that challenged the poor bear image and somewhat turned it around.

The same, it seems, was happening on the continent. Bear Necessity, it seems, it more than just a bear club…

Realising it’s roots is with the chub and hairy brigade, it also recognises the hot fraternity in the bear world. Being European based there is a general open mindedness about sex and sexuality, combine this with a hot muscly bear image, some of Europe’s hottest bear styled porn stars and we are looking at more a Bear Essential!

Playing at this party will be a first and one I am looking forwars to. Held in Area, Beyonds hot spot of a venue, and with it’s special ‘Bear Cave’in the form of Tonker…it really does have most basis covered.

I may not be a bear in the intended sense of the word, but I am quite hapy to go with the cub or seal…(hairless).
