Podcast: SuperSocialCast

Made with the intention to promote Minty, Paul Heron & my new night SuperSocial @ Blitz Bar, it was a short lived enterprise as the venue decided not to have hosts or brands after the first week.

Not struck out, we will rise again…, in the meanwhile here is our SuperSocialCast.

Both Paul Heron & I picked 5 tracks each from our current top 10 tracks and created this miniCast to promote the night. One song on one song off, our own individual styles unite to create a unique SuperSocial Podcast.

Enjoy!

Podcasts: Industri Last Dance Volume 1 & 2

Recorded live at Industri on the night of it’s last dance, this is a live mix featuring Brent Nicholls & Paul Heron playing back to back.

Although there are some classic tunes on here giving a nod to the past there are also plenty of new material that looks to the future.

Industri was a social soiree that was born at Barcode Vauxhall as a collaboration between BCV & Brent Nicholls, Paul Heron & Minty. It essentially introduced the Soho styled soiree to the Vauxhall clubbing centre. Just before it’s third birthday Industri moved to Barcode Soho and reinvented itself in the heart of this thriving social enviroment.

When it was announced that Barcode Soho was to close, Industri too thought it was time to call it quits.

This podcasts is one of two parts that pays tribute to a night that created new friends, forged great relationships and gave London a unqiue soiree experience.

CLUBBING: INDUSTRI’S LAST DANCE

INDUSTRI came dancing into our lives and on Wednesday 29th June it went dancing back out. After Three and half years it closes, along with the long running venue Barcode Soho. Industri was the first to bring the soical soiree concept to Vauxhall. With love and respect we let it go t morph into something new (details soon).

Below is a collection of flyers, web virals and more that build a visual landscape of Industri over the years.

HISTORY:

THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE THAT HELPED MAKE ‘INDUSTRI’ ONE OF THE BEST SOCIAL SOIREE’S ON THE SCENE.

Industri was born from a collaboration between Kerry Chapman formerly of Barcode & the united talents of Minty, Brent Nicholls & Paul Heron. Strong photographic imagery by Chris Jepson saw Industri introduce the social soiree concept to Vauxhall. The idea basically was to have a house party in the venue…and Industri soon became the place for off duty DJs, horny hookers, Gogos with stars in thier eyes, clubbers, Vauxhall trash bags and more. It’s reputation of a place where anything could happend and most likely did was cemented.

After 2 years it moved to Soho where the social soiree format fitted perfectly. Industri reinvented itself again, however with the sale of Barcode Soho it was decided that Industri now had run it’s course and along with Barcode Soho would close.

While this may be the last dance for Industri…it certainly isn’t for Minty, Brent Nicholls & Paul Heron….

Industri: Voulez Vous?

INDUSTRI is Barcode Soho’s own Wednesday night social soiree with Minty, Paul Heron & Myself. It has always been know for it’s at time controversial but stand out above the crowd flyer and artwork.

Chris Jepson was the first one to us behind the lens and created some artwork i was proud to be part of. a second photo shoot saw Paul & I in bed with Minty who wore nothing more than nipple tassels. This was followed by a ‘traditional Christmas flyer with more than a pervy twist. For  the pre party ot he called Hustla Industri we sported fetish wear which in retrospect would have made a great cover for my PIMPS, HOOKERS & GOGO podcast

A third photo shoot saw us walking the streets of Soho taking in various well now Soho spots to capture the essence of our new home as we relaunched the night at Barcode Soho. This shoot produced quite a few new images which are yet to be revealed…the first one being Minty, Paul and I standing in a puddle of water in a lane lined with sex shops, as Minty exposes here tight black sequined dress under her faux fur coat.

While these are official images for Industri, when searching for  old iconic album covers, I thought…wouldn’t it be funny to touch up these covers with an  Industri style as part of a web based viral market campaign.

With photoshop, a copy of ABBA’s Voulez Vous Album artwork and various images of Minty, Paul & Myself Industri Voulez Vous was born. It is meant to be a bit of fun, and more importantly, pay homage to my favourite icons of my youth. You can see the result below where Paul is Benny, I am Bjorn and Minty in two guises becoming AnniFrida & Agnetha.

Voulez Vous was ABBAs attempt at disco, producing some great tracks. The album track would have to be the biggest of the ‘disco tunes’ with that distinct guitar rift. Other tracks included ‘Does Your Mother Know’, one of my all time favourite ABBA tunes ‘As Good As New’, the beautiful ‘I Have A Dream’ and one of the groups biggest hits off that album ‘Chiquitita’.

I hope you enjoy looking at this artwork as much as I enjoyed putting it together…and see you t Industri…in the words of ABBA themselves on the track Voulez Vous:

“I know what you think
The girl means business so I’ll offer her a drink
Lookin’ mighty proud
I see you leave your table, pushin’ through the crowd
I’m really glad you came, you know the rules, you know the game
Master of the scene
We’ve done it all before and now we’re back to get some more
You know what I mean…..”

So if you see Minty at Industri, London’s orignal ‘Dancing Queen’, she is ‘the business’ so offer her a drink.

“Ain’t no big decision (aha!)
You know what to do (aha!)
La question c’est voulez-vous”

Podcast: INDUSTRI 2010- Gotta Move

Launched in January 2008 at Barcode Vauxhall , Industri was intended to be a social soiree aimed at scene clubbers, gogos, off duty DJs and the like with Queen of the London scene Minty as host. Alongside Minty both myself, Brent Nicholls, and Paul Heron played exclusive back 2 back sets.

Industri 2010 Gotta Move

Industri 2010 Gotta Move

For me, Industri was the gig where I tested new tunes, played classics and tried out tracks that could have either crashed or ignited a main dance floor. Over the years Industri gained regulars, had its up and downs and hosted many memorable and at times wild parties. It launched DJs, Gogos and was the drop off spot for a lot of the Vauxhall clubbers. Of course over time, Industri has changed and after nearly 3 years we decided it need a bit of new direction….and that was to move to BCV sister club Barcode Soho and from a Thursday to a Wednesday night. That’s right, Soho is about to get a bit of Industri style.

In honour of this next chapter in the Industri story, I have compiled a 12 track podcast collecting together a mix of tracks across several genres that best represents my Industri sound. From NuFunk to Tech House flavours, from Latin touches to disco dipped…this is music for moving and grooving.

Like the opening track says:

“Gotta make a move to a, Town that’s right for me, Town to keep me movin’, Keep me groovin’ with some energy,
Well, I talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about, Talk about, Talk about movin,
Gotta move on, Gotta move on, Gotta move on,
Won’t you take me to….Industri……”

Industri Moves To Barcode Soho

INDUSTRI IS MOVING. Starting nearly three years ago…Minty, Paul Heron and Myself teamed up with Barcode Vauxhall and created an amazing night. Sure it had it’s up and downs, but the three of us just worked together so well…and the flyers we created, I was told, became collector editions…though depending on how you interpret that, it could sound a little stalker-ish. LOL In any case, Industri is starting a new era and moving to BCV sister club Barcode Soho. Being in Soho, it will help rejuvenate Industri and giving us a more central, glamorous and social environment which of course is so Industri! Below the the press release….

Industri BCS 15.12.2010

Industri BCS 15.12.2010

PRESS RELEASE: After nearly three years of social soireeing on a Thursday night in Vauxhall the glamorous social soiree Industri is packing its bags and crossing the river to bring style, gossip, funky grooves and one of London’s most iconic hosts, Minty, to Barcode Soho. With her will be Industri’s own two Westend Boys DJs Brent Nicholls and Paul Heron who will be playing a special back to back set .

Industri is a social soiree where you can meet up with friends, have a drink, groove to two of London’s best loved DJs playing an eclectic mix of house tunes, catch up on gossip and just hang out and be fabulous with the host Minty who will make you feel more than welcomed. While Vauxhall was a great venue for Industri, the crew thought it was time for a change, to spread the love and bring some of that special Industri atmosphere into the Westend. Being in Soho you can expect to see more of the scene-stars mixing it up with off duty gogos, local characters, drinkers, clubbers, DJs who are enjoying a night off, hunks, hunkettes and all that makes Soho a vibrant and colourful place. Everybody is welcomes to the melting pot that is Industri which has contributed greatly to the reputation that is a place where anything can happen, and it usually does.

Come and join us for the Barcode Soho Industri relaunch form 9.30pm @ Barcode Soho Archer St W1, Soho.

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

Below is a collection of Industri Flyers…some official, others home made…chronicling our time at Barcode Vauxhall….

Video: Lo Profile 12.11.2010

Rapidly becoming THE club to be at in Soho, Lo Profile has taken another step up the clubbing ladder with a renovation to dance floor and an installation of £25 000 worth of lights and lasers. The effect? Well see the video.

Lo Profile 3rd Birthday Fri 19.11.2010

Lo Profile 3rd Birthday Fri 19.11.2010

The new lighting has made a major impact on the club…every tune dropped be it a funky house disco dipped number or a sexy underground and dirty tribal groove, the lighting would match the mood enhancing the dance floor experience. Friday 12.11.2010 certainly felt like Lo Profile was more than just a bar with a dance floor, but a real club, such is the impact of the new lighting. And the crowd, well sexy boys, glammed up girls and other members of the gay tribes who turned up for a quick dance and a drink or for a warm up to a weekend that would most likely end Sunday afternoon.

All this in time for their third birthday, and what a way to celebrate with a spectacular light show over the main floor. So the question is…where did you learn to funk like that, boy?

Review: The Week

The questions is should I really be reviewing the clubs I work at…and the answer, why not…who else better than someone on the inside!

The Week

The Week

THE WEEK, direct from Brazil, saw FIRE return to form with a packed and up for it crowd out for one thing…fun! It was a rather mixed crowd in terms of quality…from Hot Brazilian studs to the dosed up Vauxhall trash…but it all seemed to merge perfectly into a crowd all out for a good time. Steve Pitron & Mikey D mixed a turbo charged sounding but very appropriate mix for the main room which looked absolutely stunning with pieces of art hanging from the ceiling, lasers , fantastic led wall (very Oliver M aka when he was in control of Matinee)…yes, the new main room at Fire was looking stunning!

The gogos were very good too, especially Mr White Shorts (see video), Edson Costa (who is usually behind the camera and not in front of it) and Rikardo Machio (search him on FaceBook). There was another one who was a little too girly and posy for my taste…at least these were men gogos being men and not dressed in ridiculous high heels and girly costumes which seem to infiltrate the London scene as response to the Spanish invasion of clubs. Bring back the hunks!

My room, the Latin Lounge as I called it, rocked longer than expected to a mix of percussive, progressive and tribal house…in the very NO AMERICAN way….but the call of Beyond sonn empties most of Fire by 5.30ish in the morning. Djing from 3.00 meant I missed the Brazilian carnival show which was typical of such show..tits, feather and hot near naked muscle boys!

The Mirror Arch, usually the centre of attention suffered at the hands of super star DJs Pitron/Mikey D on the main floor and the new lighting/laser/layout…but it still had its dedicated followers.

Disco Matt was in full form on the dance floor reviewing and grooving….you can  read his review too at http://discomatt.blogspot.com

Anyway..enough of words…check out my video I made for SeenQueen.com below or see the pics at http://seenqueen.com/web/2010/10/club-pix-the-week-18-9-2010/

Back 2 Beyond

Beyond began it’s journey back in the early part of 21st Century; born at the time Funky house was fresh and new and gaining dominance over the old styled Hard House. Started by Wayne Shires (then of Crash) and Craig Elder (of Fire), it marked a new beginning for London after hour clubbing.

B2B Sat 2.10.2010

B2B Sat 2.10.2010

It could be said it was Beyond that saw the death of TRADE way back then. Beyond and it’s DJS fully embraced the funky house sound which the gAylist clubbers loved in all it’s forms. The sound had already penetrated the leading clubs of the time and it was this sound that saw Beyond grow from a ‘invitation only’ afterhours to a phenomenal success.

As time went on difficulty between the two promoters became more prominent, DJ line ups changed and funky house soon became too commercial and cheesy with Electro forging it’s way into the main stream. These factors saw Beyond slowly decline.

However for the clubbers at the time it herald a new start for clubbing, a new sound and was probably the last true club to have grown organically from a humble beginning to meteoric success. It certainly was the last club of that era based on ‘social’ aspects rather than ‘economic’ (but that is a completely different blog!).

Beyond attempted a few resurrections, gave birth to sister after-hours like Ultra but nothing could be compared to the original at the Colosseum. It wasn’t until Area was bought by Craig Elder did the current Beyond find a new home and was reborn as the after hours it is today. It could never be the old Beyond, that was a different time, but it was rebirthed as a new brand and worthy of the accolade of being London’s best After hours and winning the prestigious Seen Queen Best Club Award of 2009.

It wasn’t until recently that Alex Erfan gave birth to Back 2 Beyond (B2B), bringing the old Beyond back to it’s ancestral home and combining it with the current Beyond at AREA.

The first B2B had the original DJ line up, recreated the gAylist VIP room and reintroduced the Colosseum to a whole new generation of clubbers. That success was measured by B2B II which had an atmosphere that was electric. Everyone was out for a good time and that is exactly what happened. Each room started to develop it unique identity. Now this wasn’t the OLD Beyond, but a new version of THAT Beyond. There was a party vibe reminiscent of the first time Beyond came onto the scene.

BEYOND Mix August 2002

B2B, it seemed, it could stand on it’s own two disco boots.

So what can we expect fro B2B III? Come along and find out! If B2B I & II is anything to judge by…Back 2 Beyond will be a party not to be missed.

We welcome B2B back to the London clubbing calendar!

So what was the music like way back in 2002. Here is a mix I made back in August 2002 based on my Beyond set back then. Download it or click on play to take yourself back….way back!
