CLUBBING: Lo Profile A Retrospective

Lo Profile continued to impress throughout the year 2010. While experiencing a somewhat ‘slow’ summer, a main room makeover adding laser, lights and creating a more spacious dance floor saw the venue immeditelty transformed. Lo Profile became hot all over again!

In Soho there really is only one clubbing destination, and most of the gaylist boys and girls know where that is. Usually closed for most of the week, it is the weekends where Lo Profile comes onto it’s own.

It is hard to say which is the better, the Fridya or the Saturday as each has it’s own charm. Perhaps Friday is the more social of the nights and Saturday is the clubbier. The crowd at times reflects this, although the Vauxhall promotions certainly make Lo Profile a fantastic pre-club experience before A:M Afterhours or Beyond.

2010 had many memorable moments for me at LoProfile. Perhaps the best was the 3rd Birthday where by 4am we literally had to push them out the doors to send them home. Toca’s Miracle proved to be one of the biggest tunes dropped that night, and despite its classic status, it just goes t show a good tune is a good tune no matter how old.

LoProfile was my nuFunk House testing ground. It was here a lot of the disco remixes and new styled funky house got it’s first airing. Some they took to straight away and others they grew to love. Another popular sound is the Latino edged ones. You could not fail with a good cha cha cha beat and percussive rhythms. Being the clubbing arm of Gaydar  one could expect LoProfile to be forum for commercial housel, but in truth the crowd often went for more an eclectic mix of tracks. Kelis ‘Acapella’ would just as welcomingly be recieved as something more dirty and underground. This gave the DJ a lot of scope to play with and as long as they did not go off the rails, it was usually well recieved. This made LoProfile, along with the freindly staff and amiable management, a fun gig and one of my favourite places to spin.

Of course the most significant differnece came when they installed nealry £25 000 worth of lights and laser and enlarged the dance floor. This impacted upon the music, the atmopshere and the club in the most positive way paving the way for LoProfile to become a true clubbing expereince in it’s own right.

If you like your men well groomerd, nice looking, muscular, gym built and a times with a bit of edge then LoProfile is for you. Although the crowd is  generally mixed, being ‘hot’ helps.

LoProfile is open from 10pm-4am Friday & Saturdays and boast some of the scene s finest DJs including Steve Pitron, Paul Heron, Mikey D, Alessandro, Jamie Head, D’Johnny to name but a few…

Get On MyGayFace.com Tops 2010 Podcasts

My podcast GET ON MYGAYFCE.COM tops DISCO MATT’S
retrospective of the BEST PODCASTS of 2010.

GET ON MyGayFace.com

GET ON MyGayFace.com

Originally made exclusively for the
members of the new MyGayFace.com social network, the demand
was so high I put it on general release. When I made this mix I
wanted it to be fun. uplifting and the best representation of
nuFUNK house, the non specific, non-genre sound that was more about
a feeling and was equally found in funky house to progressice or
tech house. This was the return of funkiness into dance music. The
mix contains an eclectic selection of tracks highlighting the
nuFunk style…. DISCO MATT is one of London’s more controversial
club reviewers, On his website www.discomatt.com he previews,
reviews and includes many features of music, clubbing and
international events. He is a house music enthusiast and in his
compilation of the top 10 podcasts of 2010, he admits the choice
was difficult but GET ON MYGAYFACE.COM won by a siingle tune…
‘stereo love’ …that gained significant meaning to him on a personal
basis while on tour with LoveChild in Belgium. In his own words he
says:

“Then we come to our third and one of a
staggering 22 mixes that Brent Nicholls complied in 2010, many
which could have made it into our top five, were it not for the
other four. His “Let’s Chant” compilation for example was
incredible, as was his “Aural” mix & his devotion to his
appearance at Beyond Pervert. However, it was his “Get On
MyGayFace” mix that made it to our top three, like the others,
littered with incredible records from start to finish, the 15 track
composition originally created especially for members of the new
social networking site , MyGayFace”, hence the title on the mix.
However, such was the demand for this amazing mix, Brent released
it onto his website for general download, although we were lucky to
get our own copy on the day of first release, it immediately
pressing all of our musical buttons, not least with records “Upside
Down”, “I Just Can’t Hold Back” & “Et Moi”, from two
artists that really did it for us in 2010, Audio Jackers and Lissat
& Voltaxx. But it would be a mind-blowing remix of “Release
Me” and then an even more majestic Mollela version of Edward Maya
& Vika Jigulina’s heart wrenchingly stunning “Stereo Love”
that ended up securing this compilation in our top three. So was it
a dead heat three? Well we couldn’t separate Steve Pitron &
Mikey D, but at the eleventh hour in our summing up of our year of
music, Brent Nicholls edged the other two, not just in recognition
for his impressive amount of releases in 2010, but when it came
down to the wire, it was the “Stereo Love” track made that
essential difference, as more than any other record in our year, it
held & continues to hold the most memorable moments in our
travels, whether to or from a club or out on our two wheels, but
especially during our trips to Berlin & Antwerp for which
both “Stereo Love” & “Get On MyGayFace” will always remain
synonymous and very much number one.”

Podcast: LoProfile 3- Third Birthday Mix

Lo Profile, Soho’s most happening club, turns 3 years old this November (2010) and I have created a special podcast to celebrate.

Exploding on the gay scene in trendy Soho this time three years ago, the club recently went through a renovation expanding the dance floor and installing a £25000 light and laser set up. Decorated with Gaydars distinctive stars and circles, coupled with the new light show, the whole club has been given a kick of energy to launch it into another three years.

This podcast is quite special because I wanted to capture the clubs three years in music. For this reason I decided to choose one track from each year and mix them all together creating a party vibe. Nothing groundbreaking here, just a collection of good time memories defined by house music. Opening with the 2009 hit When Love Takes Over by David Guetta featuring Kelly Rowland, most tracks are big popular tunes with a few of my own personal favourites dropped in. The cycle goes 2009, 2010, 2008…and the mix ends with a special traditional ‘happy birthday’ track just for fun…after all, it is a birthday.

Podcasts: LoveChildOne- Feels Like Fire Mix.

LoveChild celebrates it’s 1st Birthday at fire. Born nearly two years ago, I was there at the beginning and this is my 1st birthday tribute to the club.

LoveChild One: Feels Like Fire Mix

LoveChild One: Feels Like Fire Mix

Called LOVECHILD-ONE: THE FEELS LIKE FIRE MIX…I was tempted to compile a ‘greatest hits’ collection but instead went for the the future with a collection of funky flavoured nuFunk, tech dipped and disco inspired tunes…yes, funky house it seems has come around again, and a club like LoveChild inspired by sexiness and glamour goes hand in hand with this more upmarket and inspired sound. Remixes of old tracks meet turbo charged new tunes…dirty bass lines, familiar samples, sexy beats and pure glamour dripped disco flavoured tunes merge to create a mix that will make you not just move, but groove.

Happy Birthday to LoveChild!

Podcast: Let’s All Chant- Remixed, Redone, Recovered

Know I know you are going to LOVE this! Another of my ‘specialist’ mixes, this is the third mix in my Remixed, Redone, Recovered series which mixes and mashes up all those fabulous hits of ‘yesteryear’ that have been given a 21st century touch.

Let's All Chant

Let's All Chant: Remixed, Redone, Recovered

The first two mixes were called LAST NIGHT A DJ  and  I LUVE U BABY.  This one is aptly titled LET’S ALL CHANT as it brings together a  collection of funky, groovy and soulful  hits from the disco era, a few of the more poptastic tunes from the  80′s and a healthy dose of classic house hits that have been remixed for today’s floors…that is 30 tracks making up nearly 3 hours of floorfilling euphoria!

This is 100% party, 100% fun and in a spooky kind of way a predictive precursor that is reflective of the new Funky/Disco house sound hitting your dance floors…something I labelled NuFunk at the start of this year and which has steadily grown not only in my set but in other DJs playlists too. It seems credible funky fun is ‘back in style’…let’s hope this brings back some of the glamour to the world of clubbing!

Words are not enough to tell you how this mix will take you on a journey back to your youth (or in many cases  for many of you beyond the womb when you were but a twinkle in your mother’s eye).

This is a special tracklist as not only does it tell you the name of the track, but from which disco vault it was dug up from. Some are obvious, and others not so….

NO AMERICANO

NO AMERICANO

NO AMERICANO

Now and again I like to create a specialist mix that showcases my diveristy and love for house music. NO AMERICANO is one of those mixes with a focus on Latin house, ethnic percussive vibes, jazz elements and foregin disco sprinkles. It has a taste for the summer and a yearning to be played while you spread yourself under the golden sun. The tunes vary greatly from the more credible percussive tracks to the more light hearted and uplifiting vocal tracks. All embrace the ethnic diversity that can be found in house music, and this is spearheaded by the Latin flavour.

Featured traccks include Soul Avengerz ‘Let The Trumpets Sound’, Dr kucho’s ‘El Mariachi’, Yolanda Be Cool massive hit ‘No Speak Americano’, no mistaningly Spanish influenced Cantina by the Starkillers and the pumping Melocoton by Dario Nunez. 19 in total!

AURAL: NuFunk House

Aural

Aural: NuFunk House

Join me with over and hour and a half of uplifting nuFUNK house drawing on the fresh sounds of summer. On this podcast I mix and merge the disco elements of funky house, the sexiness of progressive house, the dirtiness of electro house and the passion of Latin flavoured grooves and create an Aural landscape as we move through the variety of nuFUNK grooves. Feel the rhythm and let the music take control and enjoy the summery vibes.

Featured tracks include the ultra funky ‘Let The Bass Line Taken Control’ by Dr Kucho, the nuFunk sound of Funagenda vs Markl Knight on ‘Devil Walking’, Mike Candy’s anthemic ‘People Hold On’, the Latin-tastic ‘We No speak Americano’ by Yolanda Be Cool and the Mogwai remix of the classic ‘It just Won’t Do’ by Tim Deluxe.

LONDON GLOBAL DANCE FESTIVAL: The Vip Mix

LONDON GLOBAL DANCE FESTIVAL: VIP Mix

LONDON GLOBAL DANCE FESTIVAL: VIP Mix

In anticipation of the London Global Dance Festival I have created this special pre-party mix focusing on the tunes I would play for the White Party VIP reception.

As this reception is the opening of the main event, I have selected a wide range of nuFunk* House tunes. Starting definitely in the disco/funkier/soulful end of the spectrum, I gradually move towards a more progressive / tribal feel before pulling it back to a funkier house style and ending with a more clubbier and uplifting progressive vibe. I have drawn tracks from a wide cross section of genre looking for that nuFunk feel and included not only some of today’s biggest floor fillers, but also some older tracks that still enjoy a good floor response and a healthy dose of new and up and coming tunes.

There are two parts to this mix…..making nearly 3 hours of music!

*nuFunk is a term I have coined that is non genre specific, but instead a sound that I look for in all genres. It is reminscent of the funky house era, but only by style. When you give these mixes a listen you will feel the hip-gyrating, toe tapping, uplifting to the soul and accessibility of all the tracks that either otherwise could be called electro, progressive, tech or house. To best describe the vibe of nuFunk I would have to quote ‘ I love music, any kind of music, I love music, just as long as it’s groovin’….’. Get it?

HustlaBall London 2010: Cruising The Hard On Room Mix

HustlaBall London 2010: Hard On Mix

HustlaBall London 2010: Hard On Mix

This year I am opening the HARD ON room at the HustlaBall London. This special promotional mix reflects two things, my Hard On style and the time slot that I am playing. When people enter the venue I will be one of the first DJs they will hear…so creating an accessible soundtrack is important. At the same time, I need to reflect the HARD ON feel; so on this promo mix I have opted for a more progressive, rhythmic and sexy feel to my music. There is a strong percussive and latin feel to embrace the passion and this is underpinned by some dirty bass lines and beats in line with the sexual/porn star/gogo vibe of the event. I am aiming at the hip where standing still is not an option. I want people to be unaware that they are grooving to the beat while checking out their surroundings and the hunks that are guaranteed to pack the place out. That is why I called it ‘cruising’ the HARD ON Room. I want the music to be sexy but not overpowering, edgy but not noisy, accessible but not commercial. Sure, I have added a couple of classic remixes that feature some uplifting vocal only to be counterbalanced by a rhythmic and dirty beat. Perhaps this preface to the is mix is to cerebral, so enough talk and more action! Just press play (or click on the cover) and have a listen and let me know what you think….
