Press: QX Interview re Blitz

Here is a copy of the QX interview I did with Blitz project support and manager Ilyas about the opening of this new venue.

See below for the text.

BLITZ & GLAMOUR

QX: It’s always exciting to have a new gay bar on the scene, tell us the ethos behind Blitz?

Ilyas: We’re in a time where bars are closing, but we are actually opening a new one! The whole idea is to create a cross behind the old Box Bar in Covent Garden and Barcode in Soho; to get people out who want to have a good night, listen to good music and enjoy top cocktails. It’s also open during the day for people who want to have a meeting, coffee, light snack or lunch.

QX: We hear you’re aiming for a gay but ‘hetero-friendly’ venue?

Ilyas: The aim is to create a members’ club, where our members can bring up to four guests with them. Their guests can, of course, be straight and we can also have straight men as members, as long as they ?t in with the criteria and the ethos that they just want to have a good time without any judgements.

QX: Tell us about the membership …

Ilyas: We’re trying to create what they had in the old times, where the club was the people. Then, it wasn’t like you bought a product, as it is now; the product is the people. So, by creating a members scheme the people invite those they want to be with them, and a place where people will want to come back to. We want a crowd that we know is passionate about the music and the DJs that we have on board, and want to have a good time without just anyone walking in. It’s a way of having legitimate quality control.

QX: How much will the membership be?

Ilyas: The membership is free. Members are only given membership by certain people, this will be the resident DJs, the hosts, the owner, myself, the managers and members of staff

QX: One of the big draws is the dream trio of Brent Nichols, Paul Heron and Minty…

Brent: There are actually several nights here. The opening night is called ‘PeepShow’, promoted by Brad Frederick; a burlesque style clubbing night, and the only night that we’re open ‘til 3am. We’re going to have dancers and two DJs, which will be either Doug Silva or myself and guests. In the ?rst week of February we’ve got Sharon ‘O’ Love and Jamie Hammond. On Saturday, we’re looking at the cosmopolitan lifestyle of London and calling it Global Blitz. The ?rst Saturday will be called Berlin Blitz, which will feature Paul Heron and Tom Peters from Berlin. We also have a London Blitz, Latino Blitz and Euro Blltz, where we feature European DJs. On Wednesdays, we have a night called SuperSocial. Minty will make you feel at home whilst Paul and I will play back-to-back all night. In addition, we would like to invite up and coming DJs to come and show us what they can offer on an evening that we haven’t got anything on to show off their talent. They can contact us, come in, and we’ll offer them an opportunity to try out.

QX: Cool. The music policy sounds quite clubcentric…

Brent: It’s going to be quite a broad cross-section of music from commercial house to more underground. I can throw out a number of genres – electro, progressive, tech house, funky, new funk – it depends on the DJs, but if you look at the line-up, you’ll know it’s not going to be a Kylie, ‘hands-in-the-air’ kinda place. It’s going to be quite clubby, but not too hard. Somewhere that people can stay all night, or a kind of warm-up for wherever they want to go.

QX: The bar has had a major nip/tuck. Describe what the two levels look like to those who haven’t seen it yet.

Ilyas: It’s based on a burlesque theme, and our colour scheme is red, black and silver. There’ll be chains hanging down the windows, but during the day they’ll be drawn to get the natural light coming in for daytime. You need de?nition between what’s the bar and what’s the club. If people want to go for a drink then they can come up and have a cocktail or something, if they want to dance then they can go downstairs. We also have private booths, which we will allocate at times to members for their birthdays.

QX: Didn’t you and Paul Heron start DJing at this bar back when it was Kudos?

Brent: I think Paul Heron said he actually started here. This was one of my pit stops on the way. I started in Sydney many years ago, but it’s quite fun being back again.

QX: And ?nally, let’s talk dollars… how much will it cost to enjoy all these top DJ’s?

Ilyas: Nothing! It’s free!

TOP 50 TUNES 0F 2011

Deciding what would be my top 50 tunes of 2011 was no easy task. Browsing through hundred of tracks to dwindle them down to 50 was an exercise of much decision making. Do I include ‘big hits’ or ‘what were truly my favourites’ or a combination of both?

The end decision was to place in my top 50 of 2011 the tracks that would keep me on the dance floor, my favourites…the tunes I enjoyed playing. This means a few of the big tunes of the year will be missing…those that I felt like I had a duty to play instead of what I wanted to play. That would include Stronger by Erik Morillo (couldn’t stand it!), Avicii’s ‘Levels’ and that shocking ‘Bromance’…ahh, what a horrible (but popular) track that was.

Instead I selected a great mix of grooves that best represented by DJ style, my yearly podcasts and tracks I would be happy to compile into a mix (no use listing a top 50 without putting it down into a podcast…is there!?…and that is coming soon) When I looked at the tracks selected I noticed a lot of remixes of older tracks, especially 1980′s tunes and two from Depeche Mode.  This cold be just a reflection of those who are now creating music were born in that era. Remixers like Bass Kleph, Noferini, TradeLove and Crazibiza were popping up on a regular basis and funky definitely made a return in a style I generally termed as nuFUNK. Deciding my top 50 was hard but placing them in order was not something I was willing to to do. Play one of these tunes and you will see me going off on the dance floor, hopefully, along with the rest of the floor. These tunes are the ones that shook, rocked ad made me sweat! Some of the tracks will have samples if you’re curious or if you click on the title it will take you to a folder that contains all these tracks (remember, if you like them…to buy them and support the artist) Hence…Top 50 tunes of 2011 (in no particular order)…

Get On MyGayFace.com Tops 2010 Podcasts

My podcast GET ON MYGAYFCE.COM tops DISCO MATT’S
retrospective of the BEST PODCASTS of 2010.

GET ON MyGayFace.com

GET ON MyGayFace.com

Originally made exclusively for the
members of the new MyGayFace.com social network, the demand
was so high I put it on general release. When I made this mix I
wanted it to be fun. uplifting and the best representation of
nuFUNK house, the non specific, non-genre sound that was more about
a feeling and was equally found in funky house to progressice or
tech house. This was the return of funkiness into dance music. The
mix contains an eclectic selection of tracks highlighting the
nuFunk style…. DISCO MATT is one of London’s more controversial
club reviewers, On his website www.discomatt.com he previews,
reviews and includes many features of music, clubbing and
international events. He is a house music enthusiast and in his
compilation of the top 10 podcasts of 2010, he admits the choice
was difficult but GET ON MYGAYFACE.COM won by a siingle tune…
‘stereo love’ …that gained significant meaning to him on a personal
basis while on tour with LoveChild in Belgium. In his own words he
says:

“Then we come to our third and one of a
staggering 22 mixes that Brent Nicholls complied in 2010, many
which could have made it into our top five, were it not for the
other four. His “Let’s Chant” compilation for example was
incredible, as was his “Aural” mix & his devotion to his
appearance at Beyond Pervert. However, it was his “Get On
MyGayFace” mix that made it to our top three, like the others,
littered with incredible records from start to finish, the 15 track
composition originally created especially for members of the new
social networking site , MyGayFace”, hence the title on the mix.
However, such was the demand for this amazing mix, Brent released
it onto his website for general download, although we were lucky to
get our own copy on the day of first release, it immediately
pressing all of our musical buttons, not least with records “Upside
Down”, “I Just Can’t Hold Back” & “Et Moi”, from two
artists that really did it for us in 2010, Audio Jackers and Lissat
& Voltaxx. But it would be a mind-blowing remix of “Release
Me” and then an even more majestic Mollela version of Edward Maya
& Vika Jigulina’s heart wrenchingly stunning “Stereo Love”
that ended up securing this compilation in our top three. So was it
a dead heat three? Well we couldn’t separate Steve Pitron &
Mikey D, but at the eleventh hour in our summing up of our year of
music, Brent Nicholls edged the other two, not just in recognition
for his impressive amount of releases in 2010, but when it came
down to the wire, it was the “Stereo Love” track made that
essential difference, as more than any other record in our year, it
held & continues to hold the most memorable moments in our
travels, whether to or from a club or out on our two wheels, but
especially during our trips to Berlin & Antwerp for which
both “Stereo Love” & “Get On MyGayFace” will always remain
synonymous and very much number one.”

Industri Moves To Barcode Soho

INDUSTRI IS MOVING. Starting nearly three years ago…Minty, Paul Heron and Myself teamed up with Barcode Vauxhall and created an amazing night. Sure it had it’s up and downs, but the three of us just worked together so well…and the flyers we created, I was told, became collector editions…though depending on how you interpret that, it could sound a little stalker-ish. LOL In any case, Industri is starting a new era and moving to BCV sister club Barcode Soho. Being in Soho, it will help rejuvenate Industri and giving us a more central, glamorous and social environment which of course is so Industri! Below the the press release….

Industri BCS 15.12.2010

Industri BCS 15.12.2010

PRESS RELEASE: After nearly three years of social soireeing on a Thursday night in Vauxhall the glamorous social soiree Industri is packing its bags and crossing the river to bring style, gossip, funky grooves and one of London’s most iconic hosts, Minty, to Barcode Soho. With her will be Industri’s own two Westend Boys DJs Brent Nicholls and Paul Heron who will be playing a special back to back set .

Industri is a social soiree where you can meet up with friends, have a drink, groove to two of London’s best loved DJs playing an eclectic mix of house tunes, catch up on gossip and just hang out and be fabulous with the host Minty who will make you feel more than welcomed. While Vauxhall was a great venue for Industri, the crew thought it was time for a change, to spread the love and bring some of that special Industri atmosphere into the Westend. Being in Soho you can expect to see more of the scene-stars mixing it up with off duty gogos, local characters, drinkers, clubbers, DJs who are enjoying a night off, hunks, hunkettes and all that makes Soho a vibrant and colourful place. Everybody is welcomes to the melting pot that is Industri which has contributed greatly to the reputation that is a place where anything can happen, and it usually does.

Come and join us for the Barcode Soho Industri relaunch form 9.30pm @ Barcode Soho Archer St W1, Soho.

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.
