Clubbing: BLITZ

BLITZ is the newest bar to hit Soho. Blitz has gathered an impressive line up of DJs and hosts both from the old skool and the new…with the idea that a fabulous club is made up of fabulous people, which is also the standard set for its proposed membership system.

Three new nights are about to be launched in London at Blitz. The three club nights will be SuperSocial on a Wednesday, Peep Show on Fridays and Global Blitz on Saturday.

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS: SUPERSOCIAL

SUPERSOCIAL is a continuation of INDUSTRI with Minty,  Paul Heron & myself. Opening at a sociable hour of 8pm and closing at a sensible work hour of  midnight it pretty much sticks to the INDUSTRI formula we set up at Barcode…but with an obvious social upgrade to the new Blitz venue.Downstairs in the club DJ Paul Heron & I go head to head and back to back creating a unique SuperSocial sound. Expect floor filling anthems, funky house, disco dipped grooves, the occasional WTF record with plenty of progressive, deep and tech thrown in providing you with the perfect soundtrack to a social backdrop.Catchup, groove, gossip or escape the world for a few hours at SuperSocial and join in the new soiree revolution! The idea of SuperSocial stems back to the simple idea of a house party. Friends, friends of friends and more friends are welcome to drop in. Anything can happen, it can go from mild to wild and back again…and with Minty as your host you will be made to feel ‘right at home’.

You never know who you might  meet at SuperSocial!

FRIDAYS: PEEPSHOW

When Industri ended and our partner Troy from Barcode refused us the use of the name, the Brent, Paul & Minty trio was put on hold. As things went, the manager from Barcode moved to a venue called Freedom who wanted a Tuesday night. Minty wasn’t interested in doing it on that night or at Freedom…so a INDUSTRI V2 was put aside. This was when I met up with Brad Fredrick…a new face on the scene, a typical young clubber of his generation…and a person with a lot of ideas. This is when we came up with PEEP SHOW, a burlesque styled night. FREEDOM would have been perfect, but after Jeremy left the venue after a short time, we lost our contact. So PEEP SHOW was put into cupboard until we could find a venue…which in this economy wasn’t easy…then Blitz came up. I quickly contacted Brad to check out the venue..and PEEP SHOW was reborn…and this venue was even better!

Brad describes PeepShow- “Inspired by the sexual, and sensual vision of the 21 st Century man the resident “PEEP boys” will be presenting outside of the box sexy burlesque and peepshow inspired stage shows with added visual treats, stamping its way into your weekly diaries. Hot DJ talent DJ Brent Nicholls & DJ Doug Silva will be hitting the deck space in the basement club along with various guests delivering vocal, upfront, progressive, funky house beats adding the perfect soundtrack to your weekend starting point.”

SATURDAYS: GLOBAL BLITZ (9pm-midnight)

With a Saturday night only opened to midnight I came up with the concept GLOBAL BLITZ…to reflect the cosmopolitan city we live in. The idea was to name each night a different ‘vibe’…which all started when Paul Heron suggested doing a Berlin Blitz featuring him and his Berlin boyfriend known as KevinFunkt. With the Berlin Blitz named, we added London Blitz, Latin Blitz and Euro Blitz with a super sexy XXXTRA Blitz on the 5th Saturday of a month. Paul Heron, Doug Silva and myself are the main residents of BLITZ so we were allocated a Saturday each…and invited other DJs to fill in the rest of the Saturday or take our place if we could not fill our own nights. GLOBAL BLITZ was born!

From dirty, deep and dark to uplifting, hands in the air and accessible GLOBAL BLITZ will take you on a journey. Sylvia Rebel, who like Brad is so representative of the you clubbing crowd was asked to HOST the night…adding here fresh and crazy personality to the night.

The Concept of Global Blits is: The Global roster takes you from London to Brazil with stopovers in Europe.

-BERLIN BLITZ (1st Saturday of the month) with DJs Paul Heron & Tom Peters + Guests

-LONDON BLITZ (2nd Saturday of the month) with DJ Brent Nicholls plus some of London’s biggest spin maestros.

-LATIN BLITZ (3rd Saturday of the month) with DJ Doug Silva plus a collection of guest DJs with that Latin flavour.

-EURO BLITZ (4th Saturday of the month) with DJs representing the best of Europe & the UK including appearance by Alessandro Londra, Sharon O Love, Oliver M and more to be announced on rotation.

-XXXTRA BLITZ (5th Saturday of the month) guest DJs will descend on Blitz to provide us with sexy beats and horny house in this extra Blitz session.

So there you have it, a new venue and three fressh nights which I am proud to be part of.

London is about to be Blitz’d once again!

TOP 50 TUNES 0F 2011

Deciding what would be my top 50 tunes of 2011 was no easy task. Browsing through hundred of tracks to dwindle them down to 50 was an exercise of much decision making. Do I include ‘big hits’ or ‘what were truly my favourites’ or a combination of both?

The end decision was to place in my top 50 of 2011 the tracks that would keep me on the dance floor, my favourites…the tunes I enjoyed playing. This means a few of the big tunes of the year will be missing…those that I felt like I had a duty to play instead of what I wanted to play. That would include Stronger by Erik Morillo (couldn’t stand it!), Avicii’s ‘Levels’ and that shocking ‘Bromance’…ahh, what a horrible (but popular) track that was.

Instead I selected a great mix of grooves that best represented by DJ style, my yearly podcasts and tracks I would be happy to compile into a mix (no use listing a top 50 without putting it down into a podcast…is there!?…and that is coming soon) When I looked at the tracks selected I noticed a lot of remixes of older tracks, especially 1980′s tunes and two from Depeche Mode.  This cold be just a reflection of those who are now creating music were born in that era. Remixers like Bass Kleph, Noferini, TradeLove and Crazibiza were popping up on a regular basis and funky definitely made a return in a style I generally termed as nuFUNK. Deciding my top 50 was hard but placing them in order was not something I was willing to to do. Play one of these tunes and you will see me going off on the dance floor, hopefully, along with the rest of the floor. These tunes are the ones that shook, rocked ad made me sweat! Some of the tracks will have samples if you’re curious or if you click on the title it will take you to a folder that contains all these tracks (remember, if you like them…to buy them and support the artist) Hence…Top 50 tunes of 2011 (in no particular order)…

Clubbing: Rupert Street

Rupert Street is a trendy bar in the hart of Soho. Like Soho it attracts a variety of gays from the various villages from the twink to the hunk and all is that is in between. Generally it is the domain of the nice ‘Abercrombie’ type, some hooker types (it is Soho after all), plenty of Brazilians…essentially it’s pure eye candy! You won’t find Vauxhall trash here.

DJs are usually on Friday, Saturday & Sunday and includes some of the best ones on the scene playing their own hot vibing tunes. Alessandro Londra is the main resident and the co-ordiantor of all the DJs which I am happy and proud to be part of.

Since it is a bar, many pre-parties are held here for some of the bigger clubs like SuperMartXe and WE.  The bar sidesteps the politics and is always up for a fun time.

The bar staff are lovely and friendly, the atmosphere relaxed and the venue has a almost ‘Ibizan feel’ to it’s decor. Opened to 23.45 (you have to be out by midnight) it is perfect for a social drink or a pre club warm up.

CLUBS: Glamour & Trash

It started with  an off the cuff remark about  a well known scene celebrity…”oh her, she doesn’t live far from the corner of glamour and trash”. Couple this with the infamous Aubrey starting a new night with Industri Queen Minty at the hip soho club DIU…I was asked if I wanted to make up  a threesome and help come up with some ideas. Marrying my Glamour & Trash comment with a new night wasn’t hard, and the name G&T (Glamour & Trash) was born.

G&T Tuesdays @ DIU

Glamour & Trash is the new night presented by Aubrey of  ’Salon’ fame, along with his former co host Minty and adding scene  DJ Brent Nicholls into the mix. They have come together on a Tuesday night to put together what may seem strange bed fellows but are actually hot and cold on the same barometer. Glamour & Trash, or better know as G&T is about fun. It’s about funky and disco house. It’s about being glamorous while teetering ever so close to the edge of being trash, but still keeping your dignity and composure.  And it’s about clubbing with your friends, peers and those who you want to club with…sure there is an aire of exclusivity about it…and deservedly so!

The venue, DIU, is a trendy underground club with laser doors, 3D illusionary lighting, a powerful sound system and a warren of alcoves and corridors where one can be glamorous or trashy….or move between both!

The music will be an uplifting mix of funky house, disco dipped grooves and vocal tunes. Nothing too  hard, nothing to wiered, just a perfect soundtrack to get down, get up and groove to. The DJ roster will feature guest DJS from the new stable of DJs that are looking for a chance to express themselves.  Brent Nicholls, have always been a supporter of new DJS and G&T is an opportunity for these DJs to express themselves within the music direction of G&T and to hopefully open a door for them into the DJ world. Brent Nicholls will be the cornerstone of the G&T music policy and there will also be special guest surprises from some of the scenes biggest names.

Aubrey experience in club promotion is well established and is best known for his long running Salon night. Minty is the scene’s most established, well recognised and best loved host. She has appeared on the doors of  not only Salon but Crash, A:M, Matinee London and Industri ensuring that the quality and the clubbers experience is second to none.

With the team Aubrey, Minty, Brent Nicholls they hope to make G&T a club for Soho socialites, glamour-funkers, friends, the drag elite and for all those who like to live close to the corner of Glamour & Trash…you know who you are!

FACEBOOK GROUP is invite only, so if you would like to join, get in contact with either MINTY, AUBREY or BRENT NICHOLLS.

Industri: Voulez Vous?

INDUSTRI is Barcode Soho’s own Wednesday night social soiree with Minty, Paul Heron & Myself. It has always been know for it’s at time controversial but stand out above the crowd flyer and artwork.

Chris Jepson was the first one to us behind the lens and created some artwork i was proud to be part of. a second photo shoot saw Paul & I in bed with Minty who wore nothing more than nipple tassels. This was followed by a ‘traditional Christmas flyer with more than a pervy twist. For  the pre party ot he called Hustla Industri we sported fetish wear which in retrospect would have made a great cover for my PIMPS, HOOKERS & GOGO podcast

A third photo shoot saw us walking the streets of Soho taking in various well now Soho spots to capture the essence of our new home as we relaunched the night at Barcode Soho. This shoot produced quite a few new images which are yet to be revealed…the first one being Minty, Paul and I standing in a puddle of water in a lane lined with sex shops, as Minty exposes here tight black sequined dress under her faux fur coat.

While these are official images for Industri, when searching for  old iconic album covers, I thought…wouldn’t it be funny to touch up these covers with an  Industri style as part of a web based viral market campaign.

With photoshop, a copy of ABBA’s Voulez Vous Album artwork and various images of Minty, Paul & Myself Industri Voulez Vous was born. It is meant to be a bit of fun, and more importantly, pay homage to my favourite icons of my youth. You can see the result below where Paul is Benny, I am Bjorn and Minty in two guises becoming AnniFrida & Agnetha.

Voulez Vous was ABBAs attempt at disco, producing some great tracks. The album track would have to be the biggest of the ‘disco tunes’ with that distinct guitar rift. Other tracks included ‘Does Your Mother Know’, one of my all time favourite ABBA tunes ‘As Good As New’, the beautiful ‘I Have A Dream’ and one of the groups biggest hits off that album ‘Chiquitita’.

I hope you enjoy looking at this artwork as much as I enjoyed putting it together…and see you t Industri…in the words of ABBA themselves on the track Voulez Vous:

“I know what you think
The girl means business so I’ll offer her a drink
Lookin’ mighty proud
I see you leave your table, pushin’ through the crowd
I’m really glad you came, you know the rules, you know the game
Master of the scene
We’ve done it all before and now we’re back to get some more
You know what I mean…..”

So if you see Minty at Industri, London’s orignal ‘Dancing Queen’, she is ‘the business’ so offer her a drink.

“Ain’t no big decision (aha!)
You know what to do (aha!)
La question c’est voulez-vous”

Podcast: Industri 3rd Birthday

Six DJs, two hours, a whole lot of house and the one and only Minty marked Industri’s 3rd year; captured on this very special podcast. Along with Industri’s 3rd birthday the ever-fabulous host of the night Minty and fellow DJ Paul Heron’s celebrated their birthdays too. Did someone say Threesome?

DJs, scenestars, dragaratti and fashionistas all turned up at Industri’s 3rd Birthday to wish the social soiree all the best.

As a treat DJs Chris Brogan, Nick Evans, Alessandro Londra and Oliver M joined Paul Heron and myself behind the decks to mix up a unique podcast featuring eclectic genres from funky disco house to a more electronic tech sound….each DJ giving over his personal style to create one outstanding mix.

As with most of my live sessions I do not provide a track list.

The running order of DJs went Brent Nicholls (me), Paul Heron, Alessandro Londra, Nick Evans, Chris Brogan & Oliver M….can you spot the changeovers?

Just The Bear Neccessities

When Alex Erfan,  one of London’s top and more successful club promoters, asked me to DJ at the Bear Necessity party on Sat 22.1.2011 I had to question my self image. Older, yes, but a bear? More a seal or a pup…without a single hair on my body and more in favour of muscle hunk over chub, I was about to join the bears on thier exclusive picnic.

Bear  Necessity is a club from Amsterdam and in it’s short existence it seemed to have moved around Europe claiming one bear victory over another. It has been under my radar simply because it is a bear club; and the 0nly other bear club I have ever been to is Megawoof which is more a muscle bear thing than what we traditionally associate as bears.

BEAR NECESSITY @ AREA Sat 22.1.2011

BEAR NECESSITY @ AREA Sat 22.1.2011

I will be honest…about 6 or 7 years ago bears were called fat, old and hairy men. It was not a positive image, but somewhere along the line the ageing ‘Crash’ generation turned it around…got beefed up, stopped the shaving and pruning of the chest hairs and took over the word ‘bear’. Sure there is theXXL type of bear, but it was Megawoof  (still with it’s share of chubs ) that challenged the poor bear image and somewhat turned it around.

The same, it seems, was happening on the continent. Bear Necessity, it seems, it more than just a bear club…

Realising it’s roots is with the chub and hairy brigade, it also recognises the hot fraternity in the bear world. Being European based there is a general open mindedness about sex and sexuality, combine this with a hot muscly bear image, some of Europe’s hottest bear styled porn stars and we are looking at more a Bear Essential!

Playing at this party will be a first and one I am looking forwars to. Held in Area, Beyonds hot spot of a venue, and with it’s special ‘Bear Cave’in the form of Tonker…it really does have most basis covered.

I may not be a bear in the intended sense of the word, but I am quite hapy to go with the cub or seal…(hairless).

BEAR NECESSITY @ AREA Saturday 22.1.2011, 11pm-7am. Free entry into Beyond.

Details:

After the success of its first 2 events in Club Fire, Bear Necessity London starts the new year in a new venue also in Vauxhall. Area, home of the infamous Beyond after-hours, is the hottest venue is London. On Saturday 22 January, Bear Necessity CAGED EDITION will bring you the best combination of DJs from Amsterdam and London from 11:00pm till 7:00am, although Bear Necessity guests can stay on FREE for Beyond.

In our Caged edition, we bring you our Resident DJ RADO who started his career in Sydney playing for the all the big clubs there, until his move to Amsterdam. We immediately recognised his talent and he has been ROCKING our dance floor since. He is also a regular is Cologne, Paris and in Rome. From London, we have Micky Galliano, Brent Nicholls, and DJ Savin on the decks, a pretty damn good line up.

Bear Necessity London also hosts the TONKER room, with DJ Tim Jones and his Guests, Tonker is the ultimate destination for a bear drink and a bear boogie Friday night making it a great collaboration with Bear Necessity. Keep an eye for the Beer Garden in Club AREA and we like to thank the management of the venue for having draft beer available to our clients.

Hibernation after Christmas and the NYE is over, Bear of London, come out and play with us at the Bear Necessity play-pit for a great beginning of 2011.

Get On MyGayFace.com Tops 2010 Podcasts

My podcast GET ON MYGAYFCE.COM tops DISCO MATT’S
retrospective of the BEST PODCASTS of 2010.

GET ON MyGayFace.com

GET ON MyGayFace.com

Originally made exclusively for the
members of the new MyGayFace.com social network, the demand
was so high I put it on general release. When I made this mix I
wanted it to be fun. uplifting and the best representation of
nuFUNK house, the non specific, non-genre sound that was more about
a feeling and was equally found in funky house to progressice or
tech house. This was the return of funkiness into dance music. The
mix contains an eclectic selection of tracks highlighting the
nuFunk style…. DISCO MATT is one of London’s more controversial
club reviewers, On his website www.discomatt.com he previews,
reviews and includes many features of music, clubbing and
international events. He is a house music enthusiast and in his
compilation of the top 10 podcasts of 2010, he admits the choice
was difficult but GET ON MYGAYFACE.COM won by a siingle tune…
‘stereo love’ …that gained significant meaning to him on a personal
basis while on tour with LoveChild in Belgium. In his own words he
says:

“Then we come to our third and one of a
staggering 22 mixes that Brent Nicholls complied in 2010, many
which could have made it into our top five, were it not for the
other four. His “Let’s Chant” compilation for example was
incredible, as was his “Aural” mix & his devotion to his
appearance at Beyond Pervert. However, it was his “Get On
MyGayFace” mix that made it to our top three, like the others,
littered with incredible records from start to finish, the 15 track
composition originally created especially for members of the new
social networking site , MyGayFace”, hence the title on the mix.
However, such was the demand for this amazing mix, Brent released
it onto his website for general download, although we were lucky to
get our own copy on the day of first release, it immediately
pressing all of our musical buttons, not least with records “Upside
Down”, “I Just Can’t Hold Back” & “Et Moi”, from two
artists that really did it for us in 2010, Audio Jackers and Lissat
& Voltaxx. But it would be a mind-blowing remix of “Release
Me” and then an even more majestic Mollela version of Edward Maya
& Vika Jigulina’s heart wrenchingly stunning “Stereo Love”
that ended up securing this compilation in our top three. So was it
a dead heat three? Well we couldn’t separate Steve Pitron &
Mikey D, but at the eleventh hour in our summing up of our year of
music, Brent Nicholls edged the other two, not just in recognition
for his impressive amount of releases in 2010, but when it came
down to the wire, it was the “Stereo Love” track made that
essential difference, as more than any other record in our year, it
held & continues to hold the most memorable moments in our
travels, whether to or from a club or out on our two wheels, but
especially during our trips to Berlin & Antwerp for which
both “Stereo Love” & “Get On MyGayFace” will always remain
synonymous and very much number one.”
